Anthropic launches Claude for Education with campus wide AI access for higher ed
Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude large language model, has announced the launch of Claude for Education, a version of its chatbot tailored to meet the needs of higher education institutions.
The release is intended to support universities in integrating AI into teaching, learning, and administrative workflows, while also providing structured programs for students.
Campus-wide access and student initiatives
Three institutions, Northeastern University, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and Champlain College, have signed agreements that grant Claude access across their campuses. The initiative also includes the rollout of two new student programs: Claude Campus Ambassadors and API credits for student-led projects.
Northeastern University is serving as Anthropic’s first university design partner. The partnership gives Claude access to 50,000 students, faculty, and staff across 13 global campuses and is focused on developing responsible AI use cases in education. Northeastern previously developed an AI-centered academic plan called Northeastern 2025 and continues to advance research into the intersection of AI and learning.
The LSE collaboration will provide students with access to Claude and focus on equity, ethics, and skills development. Champlain College will incorporate Claude into both on-campus and online programs to prepare students for workforce expectations shaped by AI technologies.
New ‘Learning mode’ feature and teaching tools
A core component of Claude for Education is the introduction of a feature called Learning mode. Built into Claude’s “Projects” tool, it encourages students to think independently rather than rely on AI for answers. The feature includes Socratic questioning prompts, concept reinforcement, and structured templates for academic work.
Use cases outlined by Anthropic include literature review drafting, calculus problem-solving, and feedback on thesis statements. Faculty can use Claude to align grading rubrics to outcomes, provide personalized essay feedback, and create varying levels of subject-specific content such as chemistry equations.
Administrative staff are also expected to benefit. Claude can be used to analyze enrollment patterns, generate responses to frequently asked questions, and summarize dense policy documents, all within an enterprise-grade privacy framework.
Integration with educational infrastructure
Anthropic is also partnering with Internet2 and Instructure to ensure Claude integrates with existing educational systems. Internet2 provides cloud and network solutions for the education sector, and Anthropic is currently participating in a NET+ service evaluation through the organization. Instructure, the company behind the Canvas learning management system, is working with Anthropic to embed Claude into teaching and learning workflows.
Focus on responsible AI development
LSE President and Vice Chancellor Larry Kramer said, “Since our founding, LSE has been at the forefront of understanding social change and seeking solutions to real world challenges. This new partnership is part of that mission. As social scientists, we are in a unique position to understand and shape how AI can positively transform education and society.”
Champlain College President Alex Hernandez added, “AI is changing what it means to be Ready for Work and, as a future-focused college, Champlain is giving students opportunities to use AI so they can hit the ground running when they graduate. The Anthropic collaboration is fueling a new wave of innovations at Champlain College, giving us an opportunity to learn lessons that can benefit all higher education.”
