Neuhaus names Katherine Smith as new CEO amid leadership transition

Leadership transition includes handover period ahead of Dr. Tracy White Weeden’s August retirement

Neuhaus Education Center (NEC), a Texas-based nonprofit focused on evidence-based literacy education, has named Katherine Smith as its next President and Chief Executive Officer.

Smith will assume the role on April 7, 2025, as part of a planned transition following the retirement of Dr. Tracy White Weeden.

NEC provides professional development and certification for educators, family support for learning differences, and adult literacy programs. The organization promotes the Science of Reading through educator training and national outreach.

Dr. White Weeden has served as President and CEO since 2015. During her tenure, NEC expanded its national partnerships and programming to include communities in states such as Alabama, New Mexico, and Alaska.

Dr. White Weeden said: “Leading Neuhaus has been the honor of a lifetime. Neuhaus stands at the forefront of literacy advocacy, and I know Katherine’s expertise, vision, and passion for education will propel Neuhaus into its next chapter of impact.”

Katherine Smith to lead next phase of strategy

Smith previously served as CEO of the Houston ISD Foundation, where she focused on organizational sustainability and visibility. Her career includes roles in K-12 education, philanthropy, dyslexia consulting, and classroom teaching.

NEC confirmed that Dr. White Weeden and Smith will work together through a leadership transition period until the official handover on August 31, 2025. Following that, Dr. White Weeden will remain involved as a speaker and ambassador for the organization.

Smith said: “I am honored to step into this role at Neuhaus Education Center, an organization with a profound commitment to literacy and educational excellence. The mission of Neuhaus aligns deeply with my passion for ensuring all students have access to the resources they need to succeed. I look forward to collaborating with the Neuhaus team, educators, and stakeholders to continue making a meaningful impact.”
