New initiative integrates AI tools into curriculum, research, and real-world learning across disciplines

American University has launched the Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence (IAAI) at its Kogod School of Business. The new initiative aims to expand AI education, research, and industry engagement through a cross-disciplinary model involving faculty from across the university’s academic divisions.

Kogod, a Washington, D.C.-based business school, has increased its investment in AI since 2023, with more than 40 AI-integrated courses, new faculty hires, and strategic partnerships to scale AI literacy among students and staff. The IAAI formalizes these efforts and serves as a central hub for applied research and AI-driven learning across both undergraduate and graduate programs.

AI integrated across curriculum and research

The institute embeds artificial intelligence tools into teaching while also supporting research on ethical use, innovation, and application. Kogod’s faculty have collaborated with Perplexity AI to provide access to enterprise-level tools for students and staff. The school is revising its MS in Analytics to introduce new degree and certificate programs focused on AI and business analytics.

Leadership of the IAAI includes Professors Gwanhoo Lee, Angela Virtu, and Bei Xiao, who will oversee a group of nearly two dozen faculty working as AI Fellows across law, political science, computer science, sustainability, and business disciplines.

David Marchick, Dean of the Kogod School of Business, said:

“We have embraced AI with unprecedented vigor, incorporating it across all aspects of our curricula. The launch of the Institute for Applied AI further solidifies our commitment to delivering a business education that is not just current but ahead of the curve.”

Positioning for industry needs and ethical leadership

University leaders have emphasized that the IAAI is designed to strengthen student outcomes, encourage cross-campus innovation, and prepare graduates for evolving market demands. Faculty will work with industry partners to offer practical experience in AI application, while also contributing to policy and ethical frameworks.

Jonathan Alger, President of American University, commented:

“The establishment of the Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence marks a significant milestone in American University's journey to lead transformative and ethical applications of AI. Our interdisciplinary approach not only prepares our students for the evolving job market but positions AU at the forefront of global AI education.”

Gwanhoo Lee, Professor at Kogod and one of the IAAI's co-leads, added:

“The Institute exemplifies AU's commitment to collaboration across disciplines, leveraging the strengths of faculty from Kogod, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Public Affairs, the School of International Service, and the Washington College of Law. Through collaboration, we can advance high-impact research, drive innovation in teaching, and create real-world learning opportunities for students.”
