Avant introduces AI language tool Mira Coach+ as it expands beyond assessment into full EdTech platform
Language proficiency firm expands into learning and certification with AI-driven feedback platform
Avant, a company known for developing the first online language proficiency test, has announced a rebrand and introduced Mira Coach+, an AI-based tool that offers real-time feedback on vocabulary and contextual language use.
The launch marks the company’s move to offer services across learning, assessment, and certification.
Founded in 2001, Avant currently supports over 500,000 test takers each year across 27 countries. Its assessments are available in more than 140 languages and are recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education.
Shift toward integrated language support
Mira Coach+ is now available in Spanish and English for learners aged 13 and above. It provides task-based activities and simulated learning scenarios. Additional languages are expected to be added later in 2025. The tool sits within a wider platform that includes professional development for educators and language certification for learners.
“Language can connect or divide us,” says David Bong, founder and chief executive officer at Avant. “The stakes have never been higher for ensuring that we can truly understand each other. That is why Avant is committed to transforming how we learn and teach languages.”
“For over two decades, we’ve led the way in language proficiency testing. Now, we’re expanding our offerings to support students and educators through every stage of their language learning journey.”
Avant Learn and Avant MORE Learning support both student and teacher development. Avant Assess continues to deliver the STAMP (Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency) test, used by schools and organizations to evaluate language proficiency. The test is also integrated into other platforms, including Duolingo, which uses it to measure the effectiveness of its learning tools.
Through Avant Certify, test-takers can qualify for the Global Seal of Biliteracy, accepted by 47 credentialing organizations.
Growth supported by new appointments
Avant has made several leadership changes as part of its repositioning. Joe Hyrkin has joined the board, while Yalan King has been appointed president of Mira, where she will oversee further development of the AI-driven learning portfolio.
“We’ve seen how technology can unlock new ways of learning and assessing language skills. Avant is evolving rapidly to meet the real needs of today’s learners, leveraging AI and other technologies while maintaining the human spirit that has always been the heart of the company,” says David Bong.
