Tool aims to give instructors data on student learning behaviors, performance gaps, and engagement patterns

Cengage, the higher education business of Cengage Group, will introduce a new AI-powered dashboard for faculty users starting in fall 2025. The tool is designed to provide real-time, anonymized insights based on student activity data from the company’s Student Assistant platform.

The new dashboard will allow instructors to analyze how students study, where they encounter difficulties, and how they interact with course content. This functionality is intended to support more personalized instruction, flag at-risk learners, and help educators identify underlying issues before they impact performance.

Cengage provides digital platforms and subscription services to millions of higher education instructors and students worldwide. Its products include MindTap, WebAssign, and Cengage Unlimited, which offer access to textbooks, assessments, and learning tools.

Darren Person, Chief Digital Officer at Cengage Group, said: “At Cengage Group, we are redefining what’s possible in education, leveraging advanced technologies like AI as a conduit to help learners and educators succeed.”

Focus on engagement patterns and personalized support

The AI-powered dashboard is built on real-time, anonymized student interactions. It will offer instructors both class-level and individual-level data, allowing them to monitor learning patterns, engagement trends, and concept mastery through chat logs, question types, and sentiment analysis.

According to Cengage, the system can generate recommendations for individualized support and help faculty build student-specific improvement plans based on live course data.

Nhaim Khoury, EVP and General Manager for Cengage Academic, commented:

“According to our research, while the vast majority of higher education instructors are now familiar with GenAI and its capabilities, just under half are actively using it. Faculty want GenAI to help them personalize the learning experience and ultimately save time; our new AI-powered insights functionality is the first step in this evolution, arming educators with the data and insights they need to drive engagement and improve outcomes.”

Key features of the tool include:

  • Class-level insights showing patterns in student engagement and concept gaps

  • Student-specific data highlighting study habits, challenges, and sentiment

  • AI-driven improvement plans with real-time recommendations

Broader AI rollout across product suite

The dashboard follows other AI-related developments by Cengage Group, including the Student Assistant tool and Skills Navigator by Infosec. All are part of the company’s broader strategy to integrate AI and machine learning across its products.

Person added: “We see AI as a tool to amplify the human element of education — not replace it. We believe teaching and learning are inherently personal and strive to develop learning solutions that strengthen the relationship between educators and learners. The AI-powered enhancements to our faculty dashboard are a step forward in this journey and we are excited to get it into the hands of faculty this fall.”
