Pearson has announced the expansion of Chief Technology Officer Dave Treat’s responsibilities as the company accelerates its AI and digital strategy. The update was shared publicly by Pearson CEO Omar Abbosh in a LinkedIn post published on Tuesday.

CTO to lead full digital and technology operations

In the LinkedIn post, Abbosh confirmed that Treat will now oversee Pearson’s entire digital and technology operation, in addition to his existing architectural and innovation responsibilities.

“We are moving quickly to build out our AI capabilities to support learners, educators, employers, and workers in an era that requires many new skills,” Abbosh wrote. “We’ve recently announced that David Treat, our Chief Technology Officer, will take on an expanded role as we further scale our AI and tech capabilities across Pearson.”

He added: “Dave has had a significant influence on the company in the short nine months since he joined us. Now, he will be taking on our full digital and technology operation in addition to his architectural and innovation responsibilities.”

Treat will continue to report to Abbosh and retain the title of Chief Technology Officer. According to Pearson, the role change will take effect on April 7.

Leadership transition

Abbosh also used the post to announce the departure of Marykay Wells, Pearson’s Chief Information Officer. Her last day will be April 4.

“I also want to express my gratitude to Marykay Wells, Pearson’s Chief Information Officer,” Abbosh wrote. “She has decided to leave Pearson after making a strong contribution at the helm of our technology efforts and I wish her all the best in her next chapter!”

In a seperate comment, Abbosh added that Wells had led a “massive and complex print-to-digital transformation” and praised her role in building generative AI-driven platforms and improving customer experience.

Background and upcoming priorities

Treat joined Pearson in 2024 and has led the creation of its AI Center of Enablement. He also oversees the company’s Research & Development and Ventures teams. His previous roles include senior technology positions at Accenture, UBS Investment Bank, and Deloitte. He holds more than 100 patents and has served on boards related to blockchain, identity, and digital currency innovation.

Treat commented:

“Being part of Pearson at this thrilling juncture for the company is a source of pride for me, especially as technology begins to revolutionize how we learn and work. What Marykay and the digital and technology organization have accomplished over the years to modernize and expand our technology estate – especially with generative AI – is truly amazing. I am eager to take that work forward and explore new ways to leverage innovative technology to help people realize the life they imagine through learning.”
