Joe Jonas and PlanetPlay join forces for Make Green Tuesday Moves, encouraging gamers to support sustainability

Pop star Joe Jonas has teamed up with PlanetPlay, a not-for-profit platform, to support the growing Make Green Tuesday Moves (MGTM) project, which channels the passion for video games into positive action for the planet.

Starting today, 1st October 2024, gamers worldwide can download exclusive in-game items featuring Jonas, with proceeds directed to PlanetPlay’s eco-donate platform.

MGTM wants to engage gamers in sustainability efforts by offering them downloadable content (DLC) that not only enhances their gaming experience but also contributes to sustainability projects such as reforestation, renewable energy initiatives, and ocean clean-ups. Jonas is October’s "Star of the Month," following David Hasselhoff, who joined the movement in July.

Sustainability in gaming

Several leading video game titles, including popular mobile and console games like Bowling Club, Runescape, Peridot, and Love & Pies, are participating in the campaign. Each game offers downloadable content featuring Joe Jonas, including special characters, skins, badges, and more. MGTM allows players to contribute to eco-friendly causes by purchasing in-game content, with all proceeds supporting certified sustainability projects.

These projects include the Hongera Project, which provides clean cookstoves to families in Kenya, and the WAI Wanaka water conservation project in New Zealand.

PlanetPlay’s model, which connects entertainment and environmental action, has already gained support from millions of gamers and leading tech companies such as Google, which is showcasing the MGTM campaign on its GooglePlay app store.

PlanetPlay’s MGTM initiative has attracted a global audience of gamers with over 400 million monthly active users across participating games. With the help of gaming studios such as Lockwood Publishing, Boombit, and Niantic, the initiative’s reach continues to expand. In total, the games involved in MGTM have been played over four billion times.

Joe Jonas’s involvement is expected to further boost the initiative's visibility. Speaking about his decision to support MGTM, Jonas said:

“Helping our planet is something I really care about, and the best part is we can all do that while playing games as part of PlanetPlay’s Make Green Tuesday Moves initiative. PlanetPlay makes sustainability fun and rewarding, so what are you waiting for? Let's make a difference together.”

The power of passive activism

One of the key concepts behind MGTM is what PlanetPlay describes as “Passive Activism.” Players can support sustainability efforts simply by playing their favourite games and making in-game purchases. The initiative has already made an impact in various sectors, from planting trees to reducing carbon emissions, by turning everyday gaming into a force for positive change.

Rhea Loucas, CEO of PlanetPlay, said:

"We're thrilled to have Joe Jonas join the Make Green Tuesday Moves family! His passion for the environment and immense popularity with gamers will be a huge boost to our mission of empowering players to make a real difference.

“By joining MGTM, Joe is sending a clear message that games can be a powerful force for good. We encourage all gamers to download Joe's exclusive content and join the movement – together we can use the power of play to create a more sustainable future for our planet."
