Maple Leaf Foods and Earth Rangers introduce 'Future Farmer Mission' to support summer learning

Maple Leaf Foods, a carbon-neutral food company, has renewed its partnership with Earth Rangers, a conservation organisation focused on youth, to launch the 'Future Farmer Mission' in Canada.

The initiative aims to support parents and carers in engaging children over summer by providing activities that introduce them to sustainable farming practices.

Starting on 29 July 2024, the Future Farmer Mission is designed to keep children active with interactive educational activities focused on sustainable agriculture. The programme highlights the importance of soil management and sustainable farming in maintaining Canada's food supply.

A recent survey by Maple Leaf Foods found that 56% of parents struggle to find engaging summer activities for their children, with 81% seeking educational options. Additionally, 94% of parents want their children to learn more about science.

Building on the previous 'All Taste, No Waste' challenge in 2023, the Future Farmer Mission will educate children on regenerative agriculture through at-home activities, encouraging them to create their own gardens.

"Making sustainable farming practices digestible and fun for a generation of future farmers in Canada is important for the future of our agricultural industry," said Joe McMahan, Vice President, Sustainability and Shared Value at Maple Leaf Foods.

"This is why we're proud to empower Canadian families to step up for sustainability. Food production has an environmental impact, and we believe the industry has a responsibility to protect the planet. We are excited to be part of educating and inspiring the future generation — our children!"

The Future Farmer Mission will guide participants through activities focused on regenerative agriculture. These activities include:

  • Learning about regenerative agriculture and its benefits through interactive content.

  • Creating composts and regenerative gardens at home, using planters or garden patches.

  • Sharing their experiences and progress with the Earth Rangers community.

  • Completing an eco-quiz to earn mission points and rewards.

Long-Term Support for Environmental Education

In 2023, Earth Rangers members completed over 89,000 missions. The 'All Taste, No Waste' Challenge demonstrated that small changes could have a significant environmental impact. Over six months, more than 9,300 participants logged sustainable food habits, saving 19,192 plates of food from landfill.

"The Earth Rangers App is all about transforming children's concerns about the environment into positive action," said Tovah Barocas, President of Earth Rangers. "While our young members work to protect the planet through actions at home and in their communities, long-term support from a like-minded organisation like Maple Leaf Foods enables us to deliver award-winning programmes to support them."
