Villanova University appoints Marilou Smith as Vice President for facilities management
Villanova University has named Marilou Smith as Vice President for Facilities Management, following a national search that attracted candidates from across the country.
Smith, a two-time Villanova alumna, brings over 30 years of experience to her new role. Most recently, she served as Assistant Vice President for Engineering and Construction at the university, where she has worked for more than 28 years.
Key responsibilities in new leadership role
In her new role, Smith will oversee all aspects of facilities management at Villanova, including facility planning, design and construction, building and grounds maintenance, custodial services, and environmental safety. She will also join Villanova’s leadership team, working with university executives to support campus development and ensure the university’s facilities align with the institution’s mission and growth objectives.

Career and contributions at Villanova
Smith has managed a variety of high-profile construction projects across the Villanova campus, including The Commons, The John and Joan Mullen Center for the Performing Arts, Drosdick Hall, and The Mildred Adams Pedestrian Bridge. She has also led an annual $30 million capital renewal program and $60 million in capital projects, which have impacted numerous aspects of campus life.
Roger Demareski, Executive Vice President of Villanova, noted Smith’s contributions and ongoing influence at the university: “When you look across campus, it is clear that Marilou’s leadership has already left an indelible mark on Villanova.

Smith’s long tenure at Villanova includes roles as project manager and designer at PWI Engineering before her time at the university. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in real estate and finance, both from Villanova.
Reflecting on her new position, Smith expressed her connection to Villanova: “Villanova is an extremely special place that has played a significant role in my life and career.
