Preprints.org integrates PREreview feedback to streamline open science submission

Researchers submitting to MDPI’s Preprints.org can now request peer feedback from PREreview directly within the platform, using COAR Notify infrastructure
Preprints.org, an open-access preprint platform operated by MDPI, has introduced a new feature that allows authors to request community feedback from PREreview during submission.
The integration uses the COAR Notify protocol to simplify the process and remove the need for researchers to leave the platform.
PREreview is a non-profit that promotes transparency in academic feedback, with a focus on supporting early-career and underrepresented researchers. Under the new system, authors submitting a preprint can opt in to receive commentary from the PREreview community. Notifications are provided once feedback becomes available.
Lloyd Shu, product manager of MDPI’s Preprints.org, says:
“We have made requesting feedback easier than ever before. Authors simply submit their preprint, select ‘Request PREreview’, and are notified when feedback becomes available, all in one platform. This streamlined process saves time and effort so authors can stay focused on their work. We are committed to delivering feedback promptly, helping authors continue their research with minimal disruption.”
Support for researchers and peer reviewers
The PREreview platform allows authors to collect comments before formal publication, with the goal of improving their work and reducing delays in the peer review process. The collaboration is designed to offer both access to early critique and recognition for reviewers.
Those providing reviews receive DOIs for their contributions, which can be added to ORCID profiles. The system is also intended to support reviewer development by building critical analysis and academic writing skills.
Daniela Saderi, executive director of PREreview, comments:
“We specialize in building community-driven, human-centric workflows that foster a kinder, more constructive, and open peer review process. Through this integration, we will connect authors publishing on Preprints.org with a global network of experts committed to openly sharing constructive feedback. We are thrilled about this collaboration and excited to grow a worldwide community of contributors together.”
Partnership focused on open science infrastructure
MDPI and PREreview describe the move as part of a broader effort to expand open feedback practices in scholarly communication. The integration forms one element of Preprints.org’s stated commitment to transparency and equitable access to academic review.
Shu says:
“This collaboration marks a significant step forward in advancing open science. By simplifying the process and fostering a culture of openness, this partnership aims to create a more inclusive and dynamic research environment. Ultimately, this will accelerate the pace of scientific discovery while ensuring knowledge is freely and equitably shared.”
