University of Leeds and Perlego partner to provide unlimited digital library access

The University of Leeds has partnered with Perlego, a digital learning platform, to provide students with unlimited access to academic and professional books.

Leeds is the first Russell Group university to adopt Perlego, giving nearly 40,000 students access to an extensive digital library at the start of the new academic year.

This partnership aims to address the rising costs and logistical challenges associated with traditional textbooks. With virtual learning becoming more common, digital solutions like Perlego help institutions offer affordable and accessible academic resources.

Expanding digital access for students

As part of the partnership, Perlego will integrate into the University of Leeds' library systems, providing students and staff with access to its catalogue of academic texts. The integration allows users to explore a wide range of materials through a digital platform.

Gauthier Van Malderen, Founder and CEO of Perlego, said: “The University of Leeds' partnership with Perlego is an exciting milestone for both us and the broader world of education, shaping the future of higher learning together.

“We're so proud to partner closely with the university to ensure that students have fair access to a wide range of academic resources, all through a platform that's intuitive and inclusive. We’re eager to keep driving our mission forward—empowering students and educators with accessible, technology-driven learning solutions.”

The adoption of Perlego’s platform also aligns with the University of Leeds’ goal to expand its digital infrastructure and provide more equitable access to academic resources. By adopting this model, the university is positioned to meet the growing demand for digital materials, especially as students increasingly rely on remote and flexible learning solutions.

Accessibility features

Perlego’s platform includes accessibility features such as screen reader compatibility, read-aloud functionality, and BeeLine integration for dyslexic readers. These features are designed to ensure that students with additional learning needs can access the platform effectively.

Elly Cope, Head of Access & Acquisitions at University of Leeds Libraries, said:

“We are excited to begin our partnership with Perlego for this academic year. We were drawn to their commitment to accessibility; they make it central to the platform and the reading experience both on desktop and their mobile app.

“Now we can provide these resources with no access limits imposed on our University community, which is a really positive step forward for us. We can widen access to key resources with a more inclusive digital experience as we support staff and students on every step of their academic journey.”
