Reading Horizons relaunches AI-driven Science of Reading Collective for literacy educators
Reading Horizons, a provider of foundational literacy programmes, has relaunched The Science of Reading Collective (SoR Collective), a community aimed at supporting literacy leaders and educators with resources aligned to the science of reading research.
The SoR Collective, which has grown steadily over the past three years, is transitioning to a new community platform. The updated platform incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) to help members connect based on shared interests and experiences. The platform will continue to provide classroom resources and professional development to assist teachers and administrators in implementing evidence-based reading instruction.
Jillian Kaster, founder and moderator of The Science of Reading Collective, commented, “We launched The Science of Reading Collective as a free resource for literacy professionals because it supports our shared goal of eradicating illiteracy. The community is open to everyone who uses—or is interested in—evidenced-based methods to teach reading. We heavily vet all the resources and have a process to ensure ongoing alignment to the latest research.”
The SoR Collective offers various resources, including downloadable decodable texts, classroom games focused on high-frequency words, sound-spelling wall templates, and a glossary of science-of-reading-aligned terms. The platform also provides professional learning opportunities, such as learning challenges, and designated spaces for educators to connect with peers.
Stacy Hurst, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at Southern Utah University, highlighted the importance of the SoR Collective, saying, “The Science of Reading Collective is a critical resource for the science of reading community. Providing free, ungated access to resources, professional development, and knowledge-sharing improves our own knowledge and practice. And our students benefit when we, the educators, have easy access to resources—and each other.”
