Macmillan Learning names Tim Flem as Chief Product Officer to drive digital innovation

Macmillan Learning has announced the promotion of Tim Flem to Chief Product Officer (CPO), a move that comes as the company aims to strengthen its focus on digital product development.

In this role, Flem will oversee the development and management of the company’s digital products, including the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Flem joined Macmillan Learning eight years ago and has been involved in various aspects of the company’s digital innovation efforts. He played a key role in the development and launch of the Achieve platform, which integrates learning science principles with user-centred design. The platform has been recognised for its ability to support student learning through research-based tools and resources.

“Since joining Macmillan Learning eight years ago, Tim has been a steadfast advocate for discovery, fully embracing the idea that continuous inquiry is essential for innovation at a learning company. His promotion reflects our commitment to leadership excellence, underscoring our belief in curiosity, learning, and continuous inquiry as a fundamental driver of innovation and progress,” said Susan Winslow, CEO of Macmillan Learning.

As CPO, Flem will lead several teams, including Product, User Experience, AI/Data Science, and Learning Science and Research. His responsibilities will include ensuring that Macmillan Learning’s products continue to meet the evolving needs of students, educators, and institutions.

Recent projects under Flem’s leadership include the introduction of an AI Tutor in the Achieve platform and the development of AI question-generation tools within the iClicker platform.

In addition to his work at Macmillan Learning, Flem has contributed to the AI strategy for Holtzbrinck, the parent company of Macmillan Learning. He has been involved in the HPG AI Acceleration Group, which focuses on expanding the company’s use of AI in educational products.

“Above and beyond Tim's role in driving innovation within Macmillan Learning, he has been instrumental in shaping our overall AI agenda at Holtzbrinck. His contributions within the HPG AI Acceleration Group have been extremely valuable, and we all look forward to his continued success,” said Filmon Zerai, COO at Holtzbrinck.

Looking ahead, Flem’s work will focus on further integrating technology into Macmillan Learning’s products to address the challenges faced by students and educators. His approach includes developing solutions that are both effective and inclusive, with an emphasis on meeting the specific needs of learners.

“Our deep research into the wide range of opportunities and challenges that learners bring to our products fuels our passion for delivering learning experiences that resonate. We understand how important it is to recognise each learner's unique preferences and lived experiences, while at the same time equipping faculty with the right tools to step in with timely interventions when needed. Doing this, and doing it well, is the most fulfilling thing I’ve accomplished in my career,” Flem said.
