Johns Hopkins University Press and NSTA partner to launch AI guide to support K–12 teachers
Johns Hopkins University Press (Hopkins Press) and the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) have partnered to launch Learning with AI: The K–12 Teacher’s Guide to a New Era of Human Learning.
Scheduled for release on November 26, the guide is designed to help teachers incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) tools into classroom settings.
The book provides insights into the application of AI in education, covering interactive teaching methods, assessment strategies, and critical-thinking development. It aims to support educators in equipping students with the skills necessary to adapt to advancements in AI technology.
Barbara Kline Pope, executive director of Hopkins Press, commented:
“Partnering with NSTA on this project means that more K–12 science teachers will be aware of and use this guidebook to enhance teaching and learning in a world where AI is available to everyone.
“Teachers will now have a reference to help them embrace the benefits of generative AI while also navigating the challenges surrounding this new technology.”
The guide addresses the increasing presence of AI in schools and workplaces, emphasizing the need for educators to develop AI literacy. It also includes strategies for creating equitable and inclusive learning environments.
The guide builds on concepts introduced in Teaching with AI, a previous publication by authors José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson, and adds a K–12 focus. Joan Monahan Watson, a director in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech, co-authored the new guide alongside Bowen and Watson.
The book will feature at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in March 2025, where Watson will present a session on its practical applications. Educators will also have the opportunity to purchase the book at the event.
Cathy Iammartino, Chief Product Officer at NSTA, added:
“AI has the potential to be a real game changer for educators, but its effectiveness relies on educators’ ability to know how to use this powerful tool properly to address their teaching needs.
“Learning with AI serves as a guide for educators, providing helpful strategies for incorporating AI in the classroom, while creating a more innovative, inclusive and equitable learning environment for their students. We are thrilled to be working with Hopkins Press to provide educators with this valuable resource.”
