The Power of Words by ETIH editor Emma Cate Stokes: a practical guide for Early Years language development

Our editor and co-founder, Emma Cate Stokes, has just released her first book, The Power of Words, an essential resource to support early language acquisition in EYFS and KS1 settings.

Drawing from her extensive background in early education and her insights into language challenges faced by young learners today, Stokes’ new publication provides educators with tried-and-tested methods to address speech and language issues in Reception and KS1 classrooms.

Addressing language challenges in Early Years

As more schools report an increase in speech and language issues among children entering Reception, Stokes recognised a need for practical, research-backed tools to assist teachers in building foundational language skills. With this objective, The Power of Words goes beyond theoretical discussions, delivering actionable strategies that teachers can implement immediately.

Stokes notes, “Early language development plays a critical role in building confidence and communication skills for life. With The Power of Words, I aimed to create a hands-on guide that not only identifies key language acquisition challenges but offers practical, inclusive solutions tailored to the needs of each child.”

Key features of The Power of Words

Designed for EYFS and KS1 educators, SEN specialists, and those involved in early years language development, The Power of Words offers several key tools and frameworks, including:

  • The GUIDE Model: Stokes introduces her comprehensive GUIDE model, which helps teachers plan, teach, respond, and embed vocabulary effectively. This model provides a structured, child-centred approach to language acquisition, offering a clear pathway to meet each child’s individual learning needs.

  • Research-Backed Techniques: Each method presented in the book is backed by research and refined through practical experience, ensuring that they address real-world challenges faced by early years educators.

  • Inclusive and Accessible Approaches: Stokes’ strategies are designed to support all learners, including those with SEN, ensuring language development can be a fun and empowering experience for every child.

A Personal journey and dedication to early education

The journey to publishing The Power of Words has been a significant one for Stokes. Written over two years and completed while overcoming personal health challenges, this project represents both her professional expertise and her dedication to empowering young learners. “Creating this book taught me about resilience and the impact of determination,” Stokes reflects, “and I hope it brings as much value to others as it has in shaping my own journey.”
