Southeastern Grocers awards $75,000 in education scholarships to employees

Southeastern Grocers (SEG), the parent company of Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, has announced the awarding of $75,000 in higher education scholarships to 25 of its in-store and store support centre associates.

Each scholarship recipient, received $3,000 to cover the costs of courses, books, and other educational expenses for the upcoming semester.

This year’s scholarships continue SEG's tradition of supporting its associates' educational goals, with the programme having awarded a total of $287,000 since its inception in 2020. Eligible associates with at least six months of tenure and a high school diploma or equivalent can apply for these scholarships annually.

"Empowering our associates and nurturing the next generation of leaders is an investment in the future," said Raymond Rhee, Chief People Officer for Southeastern Grocers.

"Our scholarship and internship programmes are more than just financial support; by fostering education, providing robust training, and offering career advancement opportunities, we are supporting their professional growth and laying the foundation for a more vibrant and forward-thinking industry," he added.

In addition to the scholarship programme, SEG recently hosted a 12-week summer internship programme for 13 college students. This internship provided participants with educational support and hands-on professional development opportunities.

Interns, including international students, collaborated with leaders across various departments such as accounting, finance, digital marketing, communications, HR, IT, marketing, e-commerce, merchandising, and operations. They were involved in planning and executing projects that directly contributed to the company's operations.

During the internship, the rising college juniors and seniors engaged in over 30 business workshops, personal and professional development sessions, and networking opportunities. They also volunteered in the community and gained firsthand experience working inside Harveys Supermarkets and Winn-Dixie grocery stores.

The programme, which offers potential continued employment opportunities upon completion and graduation, is designed to equip interns with practical skills and knowledge for their future careers.

Rhee concluded, "Our unwavering dedication to nurturing emerging talent underscores their capacity to shape a brighter, more successful future for all."
