Kelvinside Academy lights up red to honor former students lost in World Wars on Remembrance Day

In a tribute to its former pupils who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, Glasgow’s Kelvinside Academy in Scotland, UK, has been illuminated in red as part of the national “Lighting Up Red” campaign in support of Poppyscotland.

The War Memorial Trust school, home to one of the largest Combined Cadet Forces (CCF) in Scotland, honors 177 students who died while serving their country.

The tribute, which has become a tradition for Kelvinside Academy, includes a display featuring soldier silhouettes and poppies, crafted by current students. Handmade ornamental poppies, one for each former pupil who lost their life, have also been planted around the school grounds.

Daniel Wyatt, Rector of Kelvinside Academy, emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by past students and others in wartime:

“The Kelvinside Academy community will never forget our former pupils who fought and died during WWI and WWII. Lighting up the school and creating this display is a lasting reminder to everybody of the sacrifice they, and everybody who fought in those conflicts, made. We will always remember them.”

The school’s formal Remembrance Service will take place at Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church on Monday 11 November.
