Hippocratic AI and Adtalem collaborate to launch AI and healthcare training curriculum

Hippocratic AI, a company focused on building the first safety-oriented Large Language Model (LLM) for healthcare, has partnered with Adtalem Global Education, a provider of healthcare education in the U.S.

The collaboration aims to develop a specialised curriculum to train clinicians on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, equipping professionals with the necessary skills to evaluate, utilise, and supervise AI tools in clinical settings.

This partnership will integrate practical nursing experience with advanced AI capabilities, helping healthcare professionals bridge the gap between clinical practice and emerging technology.

The curriculum, which includes AI-related tools and technologies, ethical considerations, and regulatory aspects, is expected to launch in the spring of 2025 at Chamberlain University and Walden University, institutions within the Adtalem network.

Addressing a growing need for AI skills in healthcare

The healthcare industry is rapidly adopting AI technologies to improve patient care and operational efficiency. The partnership reflects a broader trend towards blending clinical knowledge with AI expertise, which is becoming increasingly important as AI plays a more significant role in healthcare.

Karen Cox, PhD, RN, and President of Chamberlain University, commented on the importance of the initiative:

"This partnership is critical in advancing the use of leading technology as it helps to enhance outcomes both academically and in patient care.

“Partnering with Hippocratic to design and develop this cutting-edge curriculum reinforces Adtalem’s access mission as it arms students with the education and technological skills needed to ensure they graduate as practice-ready clinicians.”

The new curriculum will serve as a certification programme, enabling healthcare professionals to stay current with AI advancements. This certification provides clinicians with credentials demonstrating their proficiency in integrating and supervising AI within clinical environments.

Focusing on nurses' role in AI integration

The programme specifically highlights the role of nurses in understanding and managing AI systems. The training materials will cover fundamental topics such as AI and generative AI tools, clinical workflow integration, and ethical and regulatory issues.

Amy McCarthy, DNP, Chief Nursing Officer at Hippocratic AI, spoke about the potential impact of the programme:

"We are proud to partner with leading institutions, Adtalem’s Chamberlain University and Walden University, to create the first AI certification that is focused on the role of nurses in understanding, integrating, and supervising AI.

"This programme will empower the next generation of healthcare professionals to harness AI's potential, ultimately improving patient outcomes and advancing the field of healthcare."

Curriculum launch and certification

The newly developed curriculum will be integrated into Chamberlain and Walden universities, both part of Adtalem Global Education. Upon completing the programme, students will earn a certification, marking their expertise in AI’s role in healthcare. The foundational modules will evolve as AI technology advances, ensuring that healthcare professionals remain informed of the latest developments in the field.

The curriculum's launch is expected in the spring of 2025, with the content gradually expanding to reflect ongoing advancements in AI.

Meenesh Bhimani, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Hippocratic AI, highlighted the importance of nurses in the safe application of AI:

“Hippocratic AI, with its namesake pledge of doing no harm, believes nurses have an important role to play in helping to ensure that AI is safe and effective enough for patient engagement across a wide range of clinical use cases. Nurses with AI training will be better able to train, use, and evaluate future AI products from us and other companies.”
