HERide and Spelman College join forces for campus safety during Red Zone

HERide, a rideshare service focused on providing safe and reliable transportation, has announced a strategic partnership with Spelman College to bolster campus safety during the "Red Zone."

The period, spanning from the start of the fall semester to Thanksgiving break, is known for an increased risk of sexual assaults on college campuses, particularly affecting first-year female students.

The partnership, led by HERide founders Jillian Anderson and DeVynne Starks—both graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—aims to support and protect female students during this vulnerable time. By integrating safety education, resources, and mentorship into campus life, the initiative underscores HERide’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of the communities they serve, both on and off the road.

Addressing the Red Zone

The Red Zone is a well-documented period of heightened vulnerability for college students. In response, HERide and Spelman College are collaborating to implement comprehensive programming designed to educate and empower students on safety and prevention strategies. This initiative highlights HERide’s broader mission of providing safer transportation and contributing to the overall safety of the communities they serve.

Dr. Jaray Mazique, Spelman’s director of Title IX and Compliance, expressed strong support for the partnership, stating, “Spelman College is committed to creating a safe environment for our community, which is why we have historically designed Red Zone awareness and prevention initiatives to help eliminate sexual violence. We are excited to partner with HERide to enhance our efforts through safer rideshare options and community events.”

As part of Campus Safety Month in September, HERide will partner with Spelman College to host a series of events and workshops to promote campus safety. These activities will leverage the expertise and resources of both organisations to create a robust support system for students as they navigate the challenges of campus life.

In addition to the safety-focused initiatives, HERide is committed to offering students opportunities for financial independence. The partnership will include education sessions on how students can become rideshare drivers, providing them with flexible income opportunities that align with their academic schedules. This approach allows students to achieve their financial goals while also contributing to a safer transportation network for their peers.

HERide co-founder Jillian Anderson shared her enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting, “We are thrilled to partner with Spelman College to address the critical issues of sexual assault and campus safety. As HBCU graduates, DeVynne and I understand the unique challenges faced by college students, and we are dedicated to making a positive impact in their lives.”

Co-founder DeVynne Starks emphasised the broader mission of HERide, saying, "HERide's mission extends beyond transportation; it's about creating a community where women feel safe and supported—this includes young women on college campuses. Through our partnership with Spelman College, we aim to empower students with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive.”
