West Virginia University teams up with Apogee to improve residence hall internet connectivity and student support

West Virginia University (WVU) has partnered with Apogee, which provides managed technology services for higher education, to upgrade internet connectivity in most of its residence halls and apartment complexes.

The move will provide over 5,000 students with improved internet services and 24-hour customer support.

This partnership is part of WVU's broader efforts to modernise its student experience and improve operational efficiency across campus. By working with Apogee, WVU aims to alleviate the burden on its IT staff by outsourcing day-to-day operational tasks while maintaining control over key aspects of network management.

“Connectivity is crucial for the modern student experience, and this partnership with Apogee represents a significant milestone in our modernisation efforts,” said Steve Watkins, Executive Director of Enterprise Infrastructure and Operations for WVU’s Information Technology Services.

“By enhancing our infrastructure, we are ensuring that our students have the resources they need to succeed in today’s digital world.”

WVU’s IT team is focused on implementing solutions that meet the evolving needs of the university community. By partnering with Apogee, the university can shift its focus to strategic initiatives that benefit the broader campus, rather than being bogged down with operational tasks.

The partnership also aligns with WVU’s role within the I-79 Technology Corridor, a key area for technological development and economic growth in West Virginia. The improved connectivity provided by Apogee strengthens WVU’s position within this corridor.

This project is part of a series of recent connectivity improvements announced by Apogee in the Big 12 Conference, including similar partnerships with the University of Kansas and Oklahoma State University.

“WVU is an institution that prioritises enhancing the student experience through continuous innovation,” said Matt Loecke, Executive Vice President at Apogee.

“This collaboration supports WVU’s modernisation goals and continues to position the region as a tech hub.”
