Wasabi Technologies joins SINET to provide cloud storage for Japan’s academic institutions

Wasabi Technologies, a company that provides cloud storage services, has joined SINET (Science Information NETwork) as a cloud storage provider.

The partnership enables universities and research institutions in Japan to access Wasabi’s storage solutions through SINET’s secure and high-speed network. Wasabi focuses on offering data storage without additional fees such as API or egress charges.

SINET, operated by Japan’s National Institute of Informatics (NII), is an information network used by more than 1,000 universities and research institutions and supports over 3 million researchers and students. It is a key infrastructure for academic data management across Japan.

With growing data demands for research, video, and backups, academic institutions require reliable and efficient storage solutions. Wasabi’s cloud storage allows users to manage large volumes of data without incurring unpredictable costs, providing a practical option for institutions using SINET.

Aki Wakimoto, Japan Country Manager at Wasabi Technologies, stated:

“Educational institutions require fast, secure access to data in order to help propel the innovation of students while also staying within tight budgets. Cloud storage plays a critical role in enabling data access, and Wasabi offers cloud storage at a fraction of the cost of other providers while maintaining the best performance.

“We’re excited to join the SINET community and provide Wasabi hot cloud storage to users across Japan.”

In addition to its integration with SINET, Wasabi also supports academic networks such as AARNet in Australia and JANET in the UK, providing cloud storage tailored to the needs of universities and research institutions worldwide.
