Students prefer AI over teachers for academic help, CK-12 survey reveals

A recent survey by CK-12, a leading nonprofit and digital learning platform, highlights a growing trend among students turning to AI for academic assistance.

The survey indicates that over 32% of U.S. middle and high school students feel most comfortable seeking help from AI tools, surpassing their comfort level with asking teachers.

CK-12 conducted this survey during the 2023-2024 school year, gathering insights from over 700 students across the United States. The findings reveal significant changes in how students seek support in their studies:

  • 20% of students reported discomfort in asking questions in the classroom.

  • 21% preferred asking someone other than their teacher or looking up the information online later.

  • 27% still felt comfortable asking their teachers questions directly.

  • 32% felt most comfortable asking AI tools for help.

These results illustrate a shift towards digital tools for learning, a trend accelerated by increased technology integration in education.

“The way students learn and seek help is changing rapidly,” says CEO Neeru Khosla. “Our goal at CK-12 is to provide accessible, flexible resources that meet students when and where they are, helping them build confidence and succeed academically.”
