NordVPN’s Marijus Briedis says "AI revolution is here" as 60% of Brits regularly use AI chatbots amid growing concerns

As a growing number of teachers are using generative AI to support their teaching and job responsibilities, new research by NordVPN reveals that three-fifths of Brits regularly use AI chatbots.

However, a substantial number have concerns about the rapid pace of AI development.

The study indicates that while 60% of UK consumers have embraced AI chatbots in their daily routines, a third are worried about how quickly the technology advances. 25% of users do not trust chatbots with their personal information.

AI chatbots have become an integral part of many people's lives, with 30% of Brits actively seeking to educate themselves about the technology to keep up with its advancements. However, the research also shows that a significant majority (93%) are not confident in identifying AI-generated images despite 16% having created such images themselves.

The findings highlight that AI chatbots are used for various purposes. For instance, 13% of users leverage them for work-related tasks, and 10% utilise them for educational purposes. Additionally, 18% of users engage with AI for leisure activities. Despite these benefits, 14% of respondents fear that AI could eventually replace their jobs.

NordVPN's study highlights the potential cybersecurity risks tied to AI technology.

Marijus Briedis, a cybersecurity expert at NordVPN, underscores the importance of cautious use, "The AI revolution is here, and its rapid adoption is reshaping how we live and work. But while AI chatbots are useful tools, it's important to be mindful of your privacy and security when using them so that you don’t become a target for cybercriminals."

Tips for Safe AI Interaction

To help users safeguard their data, NordVPN offers several recommendations:

  • Avoid Sharing Sensitive Information: Refrain from sharing personal details like your full name, address, and financial information unless absolutely necessary.

  • Review Privacy Policies: Before using a chatbot, read the service provider's privacy policy to understand how your data is handled.

  • Use Secure Access Methods: Access services through official apps or secure browsers, particularly for sensitive transactions.

  • Consider Anonymity Tools: Utilise pseudonyms, temporary email addresses, or VPNs to conceal your identity and location.

  • Be Cautious on Public Networks: Avoid sharing personal information over unsecured or public Wi-Fi networks.

  • Stay Updated: Ensure your devices and applications have the latest security patches.

  • Identify AI-Generated Content: Look for signs of AI generation, such as overly flawless images or unusual details in faces, hands, or backgrounds.
