MedAssist GPT introduced to advance AI-powered medical education in the UK

Trustwise, Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex (Health Innovation KSS), Hitachi Digital Services, and Further have launched MedAssist GPT, a generative AI application for medical education in the UK.

The tool is designed to provide UK medical students with real-time, evidence-based clinical guidance aligned with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines and NHS formulary data.

MedAssist GPT integrates over 700 NICE guidelines and covers more than 30,000 medicines. It enables students to engage in clinical scenario simulations, practice safe prescribing, and receive immediate feedback. The platform supports over 12 languages and operates on Google Cloud Platform, leveraging NVIDIA NIM microservices to deliver accurate and efficient guidance during training.

The tool was developed with a focus on addressing challenges such as AI alignment, data security, and the potential for inaccurate outputs. By aligning with NICE guidelines and UK healthcare standards, MedAssist GPT aims to enhance safety and reliability in medical education.

Manoj Saxena, CEO of Trustwise, said:

“Our vision with MedAssist GPT was to set a new standard in healthcare training, where safety, speed, and sustainability converge. The design and development process between the Trustwise, Health Innovation KSS, Hitachi Digital Services, and Further teams was a truly unifying process with brilliant minds in AI development. We’re proud to have created a tool that not only empowers students with real-time, evidence-based insights but also aligns with our commitment to trustworthy AI.”

Collaboration and development

The tool was developed collaboratively by:

  • Trustwise: Provided its Optimize:ai software to enhance safety, efficiency, and adherence to healthcare standards.

  • Hitachi Digital Services: Integrated NICE guidelines with AI capabilities for real-time performance.

  • Further: Focused on user experience and ensuring the tool met educational requirements.

  • Health Innovation KSS: Supported testing and alignment with NHS standards.

Paul Watson, Vice President of Global Lead Healthcare and Life Sciences at Hitachi Digital Services, said:

“MedAssist GPT is the embodiment of what's possible when industry leaders combine their expertise and resources. By integrating extensive NICE guidelines with cutting-edge AI capabilities, we've created an application that's greater than the sum of its parts. This collaboration showcases how thoughtful AI implementation can enhance medical training while maintaining the standards of safety and accuracy.”

Results and future development

Beta testing has shown a 90% improvement in AI output alignment with NICE guidelines, a 30% reduction in response times, and a 40% increase in operational efficiency. The application also achieved a 64% decrease in energy consumption, aligning with NHS sustainability objectives.

The tool will continue to be tested with medical students at the University of Surrey’s School of Medicine over the next year to refine its functionality and scalability.

Professor Hatim Abdulhussein, CEO of Health Innovation KSS, said:

“This project represents a significant leap forward in medical education. Thanks to our collaboration with Trustwise, Hitachi Digital Services, and Further, we are delivering real-time, evidence-based guidance that not only ensures accuracy and efficiency but also aligns with our commitment to sustainability.”
