KOBI introduces AI reading app for dyslexia at International Dyslexia Association event
KOBI, an AI-powered reading application for children with dyslexia, was introduced to the U.S. market during the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Conference, held October 22-26 in Dallas, Texas.
Designed to reduce reading difficulties faced by dyslexic students, KOBI uses adaptive technology to assist with reading practice.
Previously implemented in Slovenia as an official reading tool for K-4 students, KOBI has been recognised with the OpenAI Learning Impact Prize and the Tools Competition award.
The app’s features are aimed at creating an adaptive reading environment, which includes real-time feedback through advanced speech recognition. This feedback provides corrections to students during reading sessions, helping them improve reading accuracy in a supportive setting.
"KOBI’s U.S. launch is a significant step forward in making reading support accessible and engaging for children with dyslexia," said Ursula Lavrencic, Co-Founder and Chief Learning Engineer at KOBI. "We’re excited to share this innovative approach with a broader audience."
In addition to speech recognition, KOBI allows students to customise text settings, enabling changes to font, background colour, and spacing. This function supports independent learning by giving children more control over their reading environment. The app is designed to supplement structured literacy programs and includes narration as well as targeted reading prompts to encourage short practice sessions that aim to build reading fluency.
Following its initial success in Slovenia, KOBI is expanding into the U.S. market with a goal to increase accessibility for students with dyslexia. Lavrencic emphasised that KOBI's focus is on creating a structured space for reading practice that involves family support.
"Our goal with KOBI is to create a safe, enjoyable space for children to practise reading, addressing the unique needs of dyslexic learners," she said. "By involving parents and reducing reading anxiety, KOBI empowers children on their path to reading fluency.”
