Future Academies joins forces with Climatise to drive carbon reporting and sustainability practices

Future Academies, a multi-academy trust (MAT) with nine schools across London and Hertfordshire, has partnered with Climatise, a UK-based carbon accounting platform, to enhance its emissions reporting and sustainability efforts.

The team up will simplify reporting processes, reduce administrative burdens, and enable the trust to take meaningful steps toward carbon reduction by using Climatise’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) carbon accounting platform.

The platform will automate data collection and provide Future Academies with real-time analysis to help identify emissions hotspots across its built environment and supply chain.

This will help the trust comply with Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirements, which mandate organizations to report on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. These include direct emissions from activities like fuel consumption and indirect emissions from purchased electricity.

The partnership will also enable the MAT to capture voluntary Scope 3 emissions, which are more complex to measure and stem from indirect activities such as supply chain operations, waste management, employee commuting, and procurement.

By addressing Scope 3 emissions, Future Aacademies can gain a comprehensive understanding of its carbon footprint, identify key emission hotspots, and take informed actions to reduce its overall environmental impact.

Alberta Edland, Chief Financial Officer at Future Academies, emphasized the significance of this initiative:

“Our partnership with Climatise is an important step in our commitment to sustainability. This initiative will improve our emissions reporting while providing crucial insights on carbon reduction giving better practical insights into our ESG practices.

“Not only will we be able to monitor emissions and report with greater ease and less administrative burden, accurate and robust reporting also strengthens trust with our students and their parents by demonstrating our commitment to environmental responsibility.”

Survey highlights challenges in emissions reporting

Climatise also released findings from a survey of 500 UK education leaders, highlighting the difficulties faced by institutions in emissions reporting:

  • Over 60% of respondents reported they did not track Scope 3 emissions, while 74% found their institutions poorly prepared to handle such reporting.

  • More than 90% of respondents described emissions reporting as time-consuming and costly, with 23% labeling it extremely time-consuming.

  • Only 29% of institutions currently use specialized software for carbon accounting, and 12.6% reported conducting no carbon accounting at all.

Lennon Harding-Wade, Director of Operations at Climatise, noted the importance of addressing these challenges:

“Sustainability reporting is a vital component in driving meaningful climate action as it boosts transparency around emissions, making it the first step on the path to carbon reduction. We are delighted that Future Academies will be able to use Climatise to track its progress toward sustainability.”
