CU Scarborough launches STEM2Sport to link sports and STEM in UK schools

CU Scarborough, part of the Coventry University Group in the United Kingdom, has launched a new program aimed at helping students explore the connection between science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and sports through hands-on learning.

The initiative, called STEM2Sport, is funded by a Royal Society Partnership Seed Grant and will be delivered to primary, secondary, and sixth-form students in Scarborough and surrounding areas.

CU Scarborough staff will lead in-school workshops using professional-grade movement trackers and GPS tools to examine physical activity and apply STEM concepts like energy and motion to real-world sports performance.

The goal is to increase engagement with STEM by showing its relevance in everyday activities.

Shane Thurlow, Associate Head of School for Sport at CU Scarborough, said, “By connecting STEM with the world of sport we’re making science more tangible and relevant to students. We want to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and sports professionals while strengthening relationships between schools and higher education.”

The program also includes sessions for teachers, providing strategies and resources to help incorporate STEM2Sport into existing lessons.

At the end of the initiative, students will present their findings at a digital conference. Schools will also have the opportunity to apply for up to £3,000 in additional funding through the Royal Society Partnership Grant Scheme to continue their projects with new equipment.

Matt Butterworth, Academic Director at CU Scarborough, said, “We are really looking forward to delivering a programme funded by the Royal Society which will have far-reaching impact for schools and young people in Scarborough and the surrounding area.”
