Certified OpenSciEd K–5 science units launched by Carolina Biological to support elementary classrooms

Carolina Biological Supply Company has announced the launch of certified OpenSciEd science units for grades K–5 during the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) conference.

The units are designed to provide elementary educators with a streamlined, certified curriculum that includes lab kits, print and digital teaching resources.

Developed in partnership with the nonprofit OpenSciEd, the new K–5 units aim to support teachers with fully integrated, easy-to-implement resources, aligning with OpenSciEd’s mission to make quality science education accessible. The materials include ready-to-use classroom resources, allowing teachers to focus on engaging students in science rather than sourcing lab components.

Jim Parrish, Carolina Biological’s President and CEO, commented: “Carolina has great news for elementary school science teachers with our announcement of new certified OpenSciEd units for grades K to 5 with hands-on kits and simplified, easy-to-use support materials in one package.”

Carolina’s K–5 OpenSciEd units are designed to simplify science instruction with comprehensive lab materials, consistent lesson flow, and digital tools for both students and teachers. The materials will be available in complete kits or as individual components. Each unit includes ADA-compliant resources and a mix of print and digital resources, such as videos and simulations, to accommodate diverse classroom needs.

These new units will be available for purchase by the end of 2024, with Carolina offering additional certified professional development for teachers to support implementation. The company’s aim is to provide a full K–12 suite that enhances accessibility and support for science education in schools.

Parrish added:

“The new elementary units will add to our existing middle and high school units and offer a complete K through 12 range of Carolina Certified OpenSciEd units. As a Certified Partner we work very closely with the developer to provide materials that maintain the high-quality standards of the open-source content.”
