British Esports launches first-ever PUBG MOBILE tournament for UK students

British Esports, the national body for esports in the UK, has announced a new student esports tournament featuring the popular mobile game PUBG MOBILE.

The tournament is open to further education students aged 16 and above across the UK and offers a platform for young players to compete in one of the world’s most-played battle royale games.

The PUBG MOBILE FE College Tournament ‘24 will run from October 8th to the week of November 12th. Up to 16 teams will compete in multiple rounds of matches, aiming for a place at the 2024 PUBG MOBILE Global Championship (PMGC) finals, set to take place in London from December 6th to 8th.

The winning student team will have the opportunity to compete in a live showmatch against a team of content creators and influencers at the PMGC Grand Finals, an event that will be viewed by thousands of spectators in person and online. The top team will also receive travel, accommodation, and additional rewards as part of their prize.

Expanding opportunities in Esports

The competition builds on British Esports’ ongoing efforts to create opportunities for students interested in esports, with this being the first student mobile esports tournament hosted by the organisation. British Esports has a history of running similar student competitions, including the long-standing British Esports Student Champs, which focuses on popular PC-based games.

British Esports Vice President Tom Dore stated:

“We’re thrilled to offer a first-of-its-kind mobile esports tournament for further education colleges, and to continue building our relationship with industry leaders Tencent.

“We look forward to discovering which winning team of students will compete on the biggest stage at the PUBG MOBILE Global Championship in London at the end of the year.”

This tournament follows other collaborations between British Esports and Tencent Games, including career-focused initiatives with Tencent’s Level Infinite earlier this year. It also reflects the growing role of mobile games in the esports industry, which has traditionally been dominated by PC and console gaming.

Tencent Games, the developer behind PUBG MOBILE, expressed its enthusiasm for supporting the UK esports industry through this collaboration. James Yang, Senior Director of Global Esports Centre, Level Infinite, Tencent Games Global, stated:

“As esports continues to flourish in the UK, we're excited to collaborate with British Esports to inspire and connect the next generation of players. With PUBG MOBILE being one of the world’s leading mobile games, hosting PUBG MOBILE Global Championship in the UK highlights the growing potential of the UK esports scene.”

Yang also emphasised that the tournament offers aspiring players the chance to progress from amateur to professional esports, an important step in supporting the development of the UK esports ecosystem. "Our partnership will pave the way for aspiring players to advance from amateur to professional, with the opportunity to compete on the world stage," he added.
