Wolters Kluwer integrates AI into nursing education solutions

Wolters Kluwer Health is set to enhance its nursing education products with new AI capabilities to improve student clinical judgment and ease educator workloads. The integration starts with Lippincott CoursePoint+, offering personalised remediation tools based on individual performance data.

The company is a global leader in information, software solutions, and services for professionals across various sectors, including healthcare, tax and accounting, financial and corporate compliance, legal and regulatory, corporate performance, and ESG. In 2023, it reported annual revenues of €5.6 billion.

Enhancing nursing education with AI

Julie Stegman, Vice President of Wolters Kluwer Health Learning & Practice, discussed the potential of AI in nursing education:

“The use of AI in nursing education is poised to usher in a new era of learning and proficiency. Wolters Kluwer has been leading the way in the early use cases of artificial intelligence in nursing education, starting with Lippincott CoursePoint+ which incorporates machine learning to facilitate adaptive learning.”

Wolters Kluwer's approach involves leveraging AI to support the development of clinical judgment in nursing students. By using AI to analyse student performance data, the company aims to create personalised remediation plans that prepare students for clinical practice.

This technology is expected to ease the workload of nursing faculty, allowing them to focus on developing clinical-based activities that enhance students' practical skills.

Addressing the needs of modern nursing education

Cynthia Foronda, PhD, RN, CNE, CHSE, ANEF, FAAN, Assistant Dean for Innovation and Scholarship at The University of Miami, commented on the role of AI in meeting nursing education challenges:

“The nursing workforce and education landscapes are facing unique challenges to prepare new nurses for the day-to-day demands of clinical practice. The intersection of these challenges presents opportunities for AI to help in graduating more clinically confident nurses.

“Supporting efforts to target areas where a student needs more work and to give them the tools to improve can positively shape their learning experience, while making them more prepared to enter the workforce.”

Responsible AI integration

Wolters Kluwer has integrated AI into its digital products for more than a decade, contributing to solutions that generate a significant portion of the company’s digital revenues. The company recently launched AI Labs, a collaborative resource aimed at bringing generative AI to its clinical decision support solution, UpToDate. This initiative is part of Wolters Kluwer’s broader commitment to developing AI ethically and responsibly, as outlined in its Artificial Intelligence Principles.

The AI enhancements in nursing education are part of Wolters Kluwer’s ongoing effort to innovate and support the healthcare sector. By integrating AI into educational tools, the company aims to produce more competent nursing graduates, ready to meet the demands of clinical environments.

As Julie Stegman noted, “We are focusing on building and integrating AI that adds value to both nurse educators and students, ensuring that it is meaningful.”
