Turnitin introduces Turnitin Clarity to track AI use and strengthen academic integrity in student writing

Turnitin has launched Turnitin Clarity, a new feature designed to bring transparency to AI-assisted writing while integrating academic integrity insights for students, educators, and institutions.
Announced at SXSW EDU, the tool will be available as an extension to Turnitin Feedback Studio, with a planned rollout in the third quarter of 2025.
Turnitin, a provider of academic integrity and assessment tools, states that Turnitin Clarity aims to help educators manage AI usage in student writing by offering a structured composition space. It enables students to draft assignments while receiving optional AI-generated feedback when enabled by their instructor. The tool also provides visibility into the writing process, offering insights into how assignments are developed rather than focusing solely on final submissions.
Features and functionality
Turnitin Clarity introduces a range of tools aimed at addressing concerns around AI usage in education. Students can draft assignments within the platform, incorporating institution-approved AI assistance where permitted. The tool tracks typing patterns, pasted text, and drafting history, providing educators with a detailed view of student writing activity.
Educators can also access Turnitin’s integrity insights in one location, eliminating the need to request version histories from external applications. These insights include similarity checking, AI writing detection, submission metadata, and playback features that highlight areas requiring further review. Institutions using Turnitin Clarity can align AI usage policies with assignment expectations while maintaining oversight of student engagement with AI tools.
Turnitin’s Chief Product Officer, Annie Chechitelli, stated:
“Turnitin Clarity serves as a bridge between students and educators. Students will need to use AI in their future careers. With Turnitin Clarity, educators can begin to understand how students use it and identify ways to incorporate it into their writing, without hindering their academic progress.
“Turnitin Clarity helps ensure more fair and equitable grading by leveling the playing field. These capabilities allow the educator to set expectations on the permissible use of generative AI alongside the assignment's instructions and rubric. Students can compose and turn in their work with confidence.”
