Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute advances quantum research with IQM Spark Quantum Computer

The Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), part of the National Applied Research Laboratories, has announced the procurement of its first full-stack quantum computer from IQM Quantum Computers, a global leader in superconducting quantum technology.

The system, known as the IQM Spark, is a 5-qubit quantum computer with high fidelity and will be delivered and installed at TSRI’s facilities in the second quarter of 2025.

Driving quantum development in Taiwan

The acquisition marks a significant step in Taiwan’s quantum computing efforts, aiming to advance research and education in the field. The collaboration between TSRI and IQM will also focus on integrating quantum technology with Taiwan’s semiconductor expertise.

This includes leveraging low-temperature Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technologies to support large-scale quantum processors, which are essential for error correction.

Prof. Tuo-Hung Hou, Director General of TSRI, stated:

“The acquisition of our first full-stack superconducting quantum computer marks a key step for Taiwan in the global quantum computing race. It aims to assist Taiwan in making progress in quantum computing technology and to demonstrate how Taiwan can leverage its leading position in the semiconductor industry to enter this emerging field.

“The collaboration will strengthen the link between academia and industry, laying a solid foundation for cultivating domestic quantum computing talents.”

Strengthening global partnerships

This initiative reflects TSRI’s commitment to enhancing Taiwan’s technological capabilities while fostering collaboration between academia and industry. IQM’s expertise will support TSRI’s research and hardware integration, ensuring the country’s advancements in quantum computing align with its leadership in semiconductor technology.

Dr. Mikko Välimäki, Co-CEO at IQM Quantum Computers, commented:

“IQM’s mission has been from the ground up to support local quantum ecosystem buildup. Our very first quantum computer shipment into Taiwan also signifies our commitment to this goal. Taiwan is the recognized world leader in semiconductor technology with a thriving industry, and TSRI’s purchase will set the stage for its technology ecosystem to jump start into quantum.”

The partnership also highlights IQM’s broader expansion into the Asia-Pacific region, underscoring its role in developing quantum computing ecosystems worldwide. The collaboration is expected to contribute to Taiwan’s global standing in quantum research and bolster its technological innovation.
