Medly AI raises $1.7M in seed funding to scale AI-powered personalized tutoring

EdTech startup Medly AI has secured £1.7 million in seed funding, led by Eka Ventures with participation from Ada Ventures, as the company looks to expand its AI-driven tutoring platform designed for GCSE and A-Level students.

Founded by former NHS doctors Paul Jung and Kavi Samra, Medly AI was created to address educational inequalities through technology. Both founders, who grew up in low-income households, experienced firsthand the disparities in education and access to private tutoring. By leveraging AI, neuroscience, and established teaching methodologies, Medly AI provides curriculum-aligned learning tailored to students’ individual needs.

Kavi Samra, Co-Founder and COO of Medly AI, announced the funding in a LinkedIn post, stating:

"Myself and Paul Jung, PhD left medicine because we wanted to democratise access to personalised tutoring through technology. So far in our first year, we've developed and launched the first AI tutor specifically designed for GCSE & A-Level curriculum, grown to 30,000 monthly active users, and achieved retention metrics similar to Duolingo (49% D1, 21% D7)."

The platform’s AI-driven features include real-time marking of exam papers, interactive question-solving, adaptive learning tools, and personalised tutoring.

The startup has gained traction with 30,000 monthly active users in its first year, with engagement rates comparable to Duolingo. Institutional partners including UCL, Innovate UK, Microsoft, and Google have provided grants totaling £400,000, while Eka Ventures previously led a £1.2M investment into Medly, reinforcing confidence in its potential impact on AI-powered education.

Samra added:

"What sets Medly apart is our broad reach across the academic spectrum. While traditional tutoring services typically cater to either high or low performers, our user base reflects a normal distribution of academic achievement - making quality tutoring truly accessible to all students."
