Lumi launches ‘Skill Up North East’ to develop AI and digital skills for the workforce

AI

Lumi has launched the ‘Skill Up North East’ campaign to provide 100 individuals in the North East of England with digital skills, including artificial intelligence, to improve employability.

The program runs from February 24 through March and will match successful candidates with local employers.

The initiative targets college and university students as well as unemployed individuals, preparing them for roles in cybersecurity, financial services, and other digital sectors.

Program structure and digital skills training

Participants will take part in ten ‘Quests’, each involving ten individuals in problem-solving exercises modeled on a Stanford University-accredited method. The sessions are designed to help participants build twelve core digital skills, including AI.

Lumi’s AI-powered skills engine will assess progress and generate a Digital Skills Passport for each participant. Those who perform well will be matched with potential employers for job placements or internships.

Lumi CEO Prashant Raizada said:

“We’re pleased to bring the Lumi platform to the North East and we look forward to engaging with the whole ecosystem, from the talented young students to the exciting employers. We hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with the region, bridging the skills gap and preparing the workforce for the future.”

Collaboration with regional institutions and employers

Lumi is working with Cyber North, an organization focused on the cybersecurity sector in the North East, and has partnered with five universities—Sunderland, Newcastle, Northumbria, Durham, and Teesside—to encourage student participation.

The campaign follows Lumi’s recent appointment of former AI Minister Viscount Camrose as Senior Counsel and Board Member. Camrose highlighted the region’s potential to expand its tech sector:

“I know from my ministerial experience that there is no reason why the North East can’t become a tech hub like London and the South East. It has lower business overheads, strong community spirit and workers receive a better work-life balance. Not to mention world-class universities, a vibrant culture, and crucially a young, hungry, and ambitious talent pool.

“One aspect holding the North East tech hub back to date has been the skills shortage. With the right investments and initiatives, the region can ensure its future success. For this reason, I am proud Lumi will play its part with ‘Skill Up North East’.”
