Currys joins Microsoft and Neighbourly to launch AI123 initiative for charity AI training

UK retail giant Currys has joined AI123, a new initiative launched by Neighbourly and Microsoft, to support charities in developing AI skills.

The program connects corporate volunteers with grassroots organizations to provide AI training, addressing a gap in digital knowledge among small charities.

AI123 enables volunteers from companies like Currys to participate in a Train-the-Trainer course, equipping them with AI skills before passing on their knowledge to nonprofit organizations. The goal is to help charities improve operational efficiency and adapt to digital advancements.

Addressing digital inequality among charities

Many small charities lack access to the resources needed to implement AI effectively. According to the Neighbourly Community Survey and the Charity Digital Skills Report 2024, 64% of charities are unfamiliar with generative AI, while 72% cite financial constraints as a barrier to digital transformation.

The program is designed to improve efficiency by helping organizations integrate AI into administrative tasks, streamline operations, and increase impact.

The initiative also highlights the benefits of volunteering. Research from Neighbourly suggests that corporate volunteering can improve mental health, enhance career growth, and strengthen social connections. Volunteers will receive digital badges recognizing their contributions, and the impact of their work will be tracked through an online dashboard.

Neighbourly and Microsoft plan to engage 200,000 learners through AI123, with a target of training 100,000 individuals in entry-level AI skills. The long-term objective is to empower charities with the knowledge needed to implement AI solutions independently.
