Smithsonian science curriculum for grades K-2 earns top marks from EdReports

The Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) and Carolina Biological Supply Company have announced that their "Smithsonian Science for the Classroom, Second Edition" for grades K-2 received an all-green rating from EdReports. The curriculum combines print, digital, and hands-on elements and employs a phenomenon- and problem-driven approach to STEM education.

It supports science, reading, and matsh development and has met expectations for *Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) across design, coherence, scope, and usability.

EdReports found the curriculum aligns with NGSS through its three-dimensional learning and assessment structure. It successfully met the criteria for the first review gateway, focusing on NGSS design and confirming the scientific accuracy and educational coherence of the materials.

The curriculum facilitates a logical progression of knowledge, integrating various scientific concepts throughout the educational series.

In assessing coherence and scope for the second review gateway, the programme maintains a sequence of learning experiences that increase in complexity and are aligned with NGSS. It also makes explicit connections to the nature of science and engineering.

The third gateway evaluated usability. The curriculum includes teacher support, assessment tools, and student resources. Its design effectively integrates digital technology and offers guidance for educators.

Carol O’Donnell, Executive Director of the Smithsonian Science Education Center, commented on the significance of high-quality instructional materials:

“The Smithsonian Science Education Center knows that access to exceptional, high-quality instructional materials in STEM education, like Smithsonian Science for the Classroom, can spark students’ engagement in science, technology, engineering and math in the context of real-world problems and real-world phenomena. Smithsonian Science for the Classroom improves science achievement and supports math and reading through hands-on science learning.”

The curriculum was developed and field-tested extensively by the Smithsonian Science Education Center and is part of a comprehensive STEM program for grades K-5.

Although EdReports has currently reviewed only the K-2 segment, the curriculum includes modules on life sciences, earth and space sciences, physical sciences, and engineering. It is designed to engage students with real-world problems and phenomena.

Jim Parrish, President and CEO at Carolina Biological, remarked on the partnership's achievement:

“Carolina and the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) have been partners for nearly 40 years. We are so excited to see them earn this coveted all-green review from EdReports for Smithsonian Science for the Classroom, Second Edition, for grades K-2. We share a common mission of delivering quality science materials that meet the highest standards and make a difference in teachers’ and students’ lives.

“The rigorous EdReports review assures teachers that this curriculum meets every aspect of NGSS 3D design, coherence and scope, as well as usability for students and teachers.”
