British Esports and Pearson Introduce Higher Level International BTEC in Esports

British Esports and Pearson have announced the launch of Level 4 and Level 5 BTEC qualifications in Esports, marking the introduction of the first internationally recognised qualifications for the esports industry at this level. These qualifications are designed to offer students pathways to higher education and careers in the esports sector, which is projected to reach $4.3 billion in global revenues by 2024.

The initiative builds upon the previous collaboration between British Esports and Pearson in developing Level 2 and Level 3 BTECs in Esports, which have been implemented in over 160 institutions globally and reached nearly 10,000 students. The Level 4 Higher National Certificate and Level 5 Higher National Diploma are aimed at preparing students for the esports industry and related fields.

International centres with UK institutions are now delivering these qualifications, which are set to begin in September 2024. The curriculum encompasses 30 units covering various aspects of esports including management, coaching and event production. It is designed to meet the demand for professional and technical education pathways developed in collaboration with industry experts and employers.

Kalam Neale, Head of Education at British Esports, commented on the partnership's goals, stating, "When we partnered with Pearson four years ago to launch the world’s first Esports BTECs, our aim was to prepare a workforce for the industry’s evolving demands. Launching the Higher Nationals in Esports continues our efforts to enhance the future workforce and provide broader career opportunities."

Freya Thomas Monk, Pearson's Managing Director of Vocational Qualifications & Training, said. "The new HNC and HND qualifications create a seamless progression for students aspiring to advance in their educational journey and establish careers in the expanding esports industry."

Colleges and educational institutions across the UK and internationally, including Sunderland College, will offer these new qualifications. Sunderland College, a recent recipient of the AoC Beacon Awards for ‘Excellence in Real World Learning’, will commence delivery this academic year, with students benefiting from the facilities at British Esports’ National Esports Performance Campus.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Sheree Rymer, Faculty Director at Sunderland College, said, "Working with British Esports has allowed our students access to outstanding facilities and training, essential for starting their careers in the industry."

Professor Philip Wilson, Executive Chair at the College of Esports, noted the significance of the new qualifications for industry growth.

"The addition of Level 4 and 5 qualifications by Pearson enhances the success of the Level 3 Esports BTEC, contributing to the growth of the esports industry and the digital sector," Wilson concluded.
