Youth Inspiration Nation seeks urgent funding to continue free aviation programme for disadvantaged youth

Youth Inspiration Nation, a nonprofit offering free aviation education to economically disadvantaged and underrepresented students in La Puente, California, is facing the possibility of closure due to a lack of funding.

The organisation, providing unique hands-on experiences in aviation and STEM, needs to raise $12,000 to continue running its programme.

The situation comes after the programme successfully completed its latest session, with students graduating on 20th September. Despite this achievement, the organisation currently lacks the funds required to offer another class. The operational costs, including rent and materials, have created a financial burden that now threatens the initiative's future.

“Our students leave this programme changed forever," said Zac Woonsam, Executive Director of Youth Inspiration Nation. "We've seen these kids transform through our programme, gaining confidence and skills they never thought possible. Now, we are facing the very real possibility of having to shut our doors, and that would be devastating for the children and families who rely on us.”

Youth Inspiration Nation, which serves the La Puente area and neighbouring communities, focuses on providing aviation and STEM-based learning experiences. More than 80% of the programme’s participants come from Hispanic backgrounds.

The programme allows students to engage with flight simulators, participate in STEM workshops, and even explore real-world aviation settings. This programme is completely free to participants, meaning it relies heavily on external funding to keep running.

While the programme has gained popularity and delivered tangible results, funding has not been forthcoming from local government or state entities. Without financial assistance from these bodies, the nonprofit has had to rely on donations and community support. However, the current shortfall has made it impossible to plan the next set of classes, leaving its future uncertain.

Youth Inspiration Nation has become a key part of the local community, particularly for students dreaming of careers in aviation and STEM. For many of these young people, the programme is their first exposure to fields they might never have considered. However, with the urgent need for funding, that exposure could come to an abrupt end.

In response, the organisation is calling on the public, local businesses, and potential donors to help raise the funds needed to continue offering this transformative educational experience. Without immediate financial backing, the programme will be unable to continue, cutting off access to aviation education for the many students who benefit from it.

“Our goal has always been to provide free, high-quality aviation education to students who might otherwise never get the chance," added Woonsam. "But without help, we simply can't continue. We need the community's support now more than ever."

Supporters can contribute via the organisation’s fundraising page at GoFundMe, or by contacting Zac Woonsam directly at Zac@InspireKids.US for more information on how to help.
