Utrecht University adopts D2L Brightspace to enhance digital learning strategy
Utrecht University has chosen D2L Brightspace as its new learning platform, marking a significant shift in its digital learning strategy.
As one of the largest public universities in the Netherlands, Utrecht University aims to provide a seamless online and blended learning experience for both students and staff.
D2L Brightspace, a widely used learning management system (LMS), was selected through a comprehensive tendering process. Teachers, students, and administrators assessed various platforms, and Brightspace received the highest scores for its user-friendly functionalities, mobile experience, and support for interactive content creation.
Alex Lodder, the virtual learning environment project manager at Utrecht University, said:
“Students look for modern digital experiences that meet their high expectations and their feedback was that Brightspace works in a clear and structured way.
“We are excited by the platform’s user-friendly functionalities for creating interactive content and the mobile experience.”
The platform will replace Blackboard, aligning with Utrecht University’s vision for a cohesive digital ecosystem of educational tools. The implementation of Brightspace is underway, with a phased introduction planned to fully roll out the platform to over 39,000 students by September 2025.
Rob Telfer, Director of Higher Education EMEA at D2L, stated:
“Utrecht University has an exciting digital learning vision and a compelling commitment to helping students achieve their learning goals and supporting staff in delivering high-quality education. We are delighted to have been chosen as Utrecht University’s LMS in these endeavours.
“We are also proud that D2L stood out for its corporate values and approach to sustainability because, operating with integrity, empowering our people and protecting our environment are central to our commitments.”
Other institutions, including Hogeschool Leiden, Hanze, and CS Opleidingen, have also selected Brightspace.
Hogeschool Leiden chose Brightspace for its ability to monitor student progression, gamify learning, and facilitate content design and sharing.
Hanze, the largest university of applied sciences in the northern Netherlands, noted Brightspace's support for personalised learning pathways and collaborative functions.
CS Opleidingen, a professional training provider, selected Brightspace to support vocational training in areas such as social security, absenteeism management, reintegration, and case management.
Telfer highlighted the broader impact of these partnerships, saying:
“Students and teachers have praised not only the extensive features of Brightspace but also our approach to working with our customers and the level of support we provide. We’re committed to help meeting the demands of modern learners with a solution that looks and feels contemporary.”
The technology behind Brightspace, used by more than 18 million people worldwide, focuses on providing an intuitive design that facilitates easy access to course materials, collaboration, and progress tracking.
D2L’s commitment to sustainability and its approach to using algorithms and artificial intelligence were also significant factors in its selection by these institutions. Lodder noted:
“We also looked for a partner that aligns with our corporate public values. D2L scored highly there, with a sharp vision on the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence, and an excellent rating for sustainability.”
Telfer concluded:
“With the growing need for flexible learning, we strive to see that our technology can meet learners wherever they are in their learning journey – helping to provide adaptability, compatibility, data insights and a more positive user experience. We look forward to further growth in the region."
