Mouser Electronics supports Summit P-Tech Academy’s STEM programme for career-ready students

Summit P-Tech Academy in the Mansfield Independent School District (MISD) is giving high school students the opportunity to develop essential skills in computer science and cybersecurity.

The programme, which began this autumn, allows students to earn Level I Certificates in Computer Programming or Cybersecurity alongside their high school diplomas. Fifty students from six MISD high schools are enrolled, with plans to continue throughout their high school careers.

Summit P-Tech (Pathways in Technology) Academy offers students the chance to gain college credits, certifications, and work experience, expanding their future career opportunities. The programme is designed to prepare students for the job market by providing both academic and hands-on learning experiences.

The project is supported by local businesses, including Tarrant County College and Mouser Electronics, which have partnered with the district to offer mentorship, internships, and other opportunities for practical learning.

MISD Superintendent Dr. Kimberley Cantu highlighted the programme’s alignment with the district’s long-term goals: "This is an exciting opportunity for our students, and it fits with our Vision 2030 guiding statement that MISD is preparing students to graduate career-ready.”

Industry support and hands-on learning

Students participating in the programme will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognised certificates, such as the PCEP-Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer and Information Technology: Programming I certificate.

They will also take part in job shadowing and internships at Mouser Electronics’ Global Distribution Centre and Headquarters in Mansfield, Texas. This real-world experience is aimed at giving students insight into potential career paths in the technology sector.

Mouser Electronics, a global distributor of semiconductors and electronic components, has long been involved in supporting STEM education within MISD.

Kevin Hess, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Mouser Electronics, said:

"Mouser strives to encourage innovation and education in youth since our beginnings 60 years ago. By sponsoring STEM programmes like P-Tech Academy, we hope to nurture a passion in areas of science, technology, engineering and math while giving students real-world experiences and tools to assist in launching their careers."

“We are also fortunate to have a business partner like Mouser Electronics that is supporting our students as they're learning and potentially providing jobs when they graduate,” added Dr. Cantu.
