Grammarly and AAC&U join forces to promote responsible AI use in higher education

In light of the growing influence of artificial intelligence in shaping modern education, Grammarly has partnered with the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to encourage responsible AI adoption in higher education.

The partnership will help colleges and universities implement AI in ways that uphold academic integrity and prepare students for an AI-driven workforce.

Grammarly is leveraging its long-standing expertise in AI to support AAC&U's member institutions, consisting of over 900 colleges and universities. The collaboration is designed to help educators and institutions create ethical, effective strategies for incorporating AI technologies into the curriculum.

Challenges and opportunities in AI-driven learning

As AI becomes more integrated into education, challenges like maintaining academic integrity and understanding AI's ethical implications arise. Institutions are finding themselves balancing the potential of AI with the need to ensure responsible use.

The team-up will produce thought leadership content, provide tailored guidance, and facilitate discussions on AI's role in shaping education.

"Grammarly is a fantastic industry partner as we launch new initiatives to help colleges and universities respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence,” said C. Edward Watson, Vice President for Digital Innovation at AAC&U.

“While Grammarly is widely used across all disciplines, I have been most struck by the company’s careful consideration of how AI can support and disrupt current educational practices. Grammarly advocates for both faculty and students, and its thought leadership and inventive solutions are serving as industry standards for others to follow,” Watson continued.

Grammarly’s existing AI-powered tools, are already widely used across multiple educational disciplines. By expanding its reach through this partnership, Grammarly aims to further refine the application of AI in classrooms. Their goal is not just to automate tasks, but to enhance how students and educators interact with digital tools to boost learning outcomes.

One key component of this partnership is the exploration of AI’s role in curriculum design and pedagogy. By leveraging AI-driven insights, institutions can ensure that the education provided remains relevant to modern industry standards, particularly in fields where AI plays a major role.

Grammarly will participate in several AAC&U events, including the Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum and the 2025 AAC&U Annual Meeting.

“Grammarly has been using AI to help students become better writers since our founding, and we’re thrilled to work with AAC&U to bring our expertise to schools eager to implement AI responsibly.

“As educational institutions address and incorporate AI into their policies and curricula, we’re here to serve as a partner. Together with AAC&U, we’ll provide educators and students with the tools and insights to navigate the evolving AI landscape while maintaining academic integrity and preparing students to enter the AI-enabled workforce.”” said Jenny Maxwell, Head of Grammarly for Education.
